Did you have shoulder surgery?

You maybe at risk for developing cartilage loss.
Our firm’s shoulder pain pump lawyers are investigating cases of severe cartilage damage following arthroscopic shoulder surgery and use of a shoulder pain pump. The devastating condition, known as Post-Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL), typically manifests 3 to 12 months after shoulder surgery.
What is a shoulder pain pump?
Shoulder pain pumps are implanted in patients who have undergone arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Shoulder pain pumps work by delivering pain medication, usually a bupivacaine and epinephrine, directly to the surgery site for up to 72 hours following the surgery. These shoulder pumps are used as an alternative to the negative side effects associated with traditional pain killers and narcotics required after arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
Shoulder Pain Pumps Linked to Severe Cartilage Loss
According to a study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, shoulder pain pumps appear to be responsible for causing Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL). PAGCL is an extremely painful condition that affects the shoulder joint. Specifically, PAGCL results in severe cartilage loss in the shoulder joint and may lead to permanent disabilities. It is believed that PAGCL may occur as a result of the high doses of medication that is delivered directly to the joint. The only treatment for PAGCL is an open procedure on the injured shoulder. Even with the follow-up surgery, PAGCL can result in life-long disabilities and permanently limited shoulder use.
Signs and Symptoms of Severe Cartilage Loss
The following symptoms are common to the presence of PAGCL:
- constant pain in the shoulder when in motion or at rest
- increased shoulder stiffness
- popping or grinding when the shoulder is in motion
- decrease in range of motion in the shoulder
- loss of strength in the shoulder joint
These symptoms typically develop between 2 months and 1 year following the shoulder surgery.
